We bought a house! I keep doing that thing where I wait until it looks nice and decorated to take pictures and make a nice blog post, but the more time goes on, the more I realize that's not happening.
My husband came to visit this past weekend, and I meant to at least take a picture in front of the house with him, but I forgot! He promised we would take one next time he visits.
Buying a house is stressful! I knew this going into it, and was determined to minimize the stress, but I think it's one of those things that's just stressful no matter what. Most things went pretty smoothly, but closing day was a bit more eventful than I would like. I had a pathology lab in the morning, so we planned to have closing in the afternoon. During the lab I had about 4 missed calls, 2 voicemails, and a text from our realtor saying CALL ME ASAP! "Great my house burned down, but we still have to buy it" is what I am thinking during lab. The house had not burned down, but there is a sudden emergency that the mortgage company needs to speak to my husband to verify he is alive and well. Well, he was on a submarine. I knew he could not be reached and this is why we had gotten a power of attorney for closing! This was when I realized that wearing combat boots greatly increased my desire to kick things. Why did no one think to mention this requirement until 2 hours before closing?? There was no way around it, and no one seemed to be able to understand why he couldn't just answer his cell phone. It was looking like we were going to have to postpone closing. I really did not want to have to do that since the movers were scheduled to come soon after closing, so I tried a few things. The ombudsman is supposed to be the communication link between the families and the boat, so I called the her first, but no answer. Next I thought maybe the Commander's wife might be able to help. I gave her a call and man that woman has some POWER. I don't know what she did, but a few minutes after I talked to her, I got a phone call from my husband telling me that they had woken him up (he had just gone to sleep after being awake for 2 days) and surfaced the sub so that he could make a phone call. WOW. A 2 billion dollar war ship changed operational plans so that I could close on my house. The mortgage company still didn't seem to understand the significance. But, all's well that ends well.
The stress didn't stop at buying a house. Moving is always stressful, but this move seemed particularly bad with things being broken and missing. Highlights included the smashed paper roses that my husband got me for our first anniversary, a creased hand-painted scroll from our trip to China and the screen of our TV being dented inwards... Fortunately I can file a claim for all of that! We'll see how that goes. And the joys of home ownership continue this week with a leak in the basement.
Despite all this stress I am still really glad that we bought a house. It is nice to have room for everything and for the dogs! We are getting a fence put in over the next few weeks so that they can enjoy the yard instead of running laps in the house.
Until I get around to cleaning up and decorating, here are some pictures of the house with the previous owner's furniture. BTW any interior designers out there want to help me decorate my house?? I am good at some things, but interior design is definitely not my forté.
